On 23 May, 1981 the inaugural meeting to establish a specialist Club for the british breed was held.   Some twenty three people attended and plans were put in motion to form what was to be called the British Shorthair Cat Society.

The aims and objectives of the Society are to improve the breeding and exhibition of, and to maintain the quality of the breed of British cats.  It is also an information centre to help prospective owners, breeders and exhibitors gain knowledge relevant to the breed.  It assists breeders with kitten enquiries and gives guidance to new owners about the purchase of a healthy and happy kitten.
